NVQ Level 3 in Care

This award is about the delivery of health and social care to clients. The focus in this award is on doing things for people which they may be temporarily or permanently unable to do for themselves. The award reflects medium to high levels of dependence and a number of specialist interventions (including undertaking clinical activities, enabling clients to manage their financial affairs, obtaining and testing blood samples, supporting individuals as they die, representing people's interests when they are unable to do so themselves). It is the intention to encourage and enable clients to do as much as possible for themselves and participate as much as possible in their care, but with the recognition that the extent to which they can do this may be very limited.

The candidate will usually be delivering care in support of, and under the direction of, a colleague who is accountable in the area of practice. However, candidates for this award may often be working without direct supervision or on their own, such as in a client's own home. Candidates will have a degree of responsibility and autonomy, and will be required to make decisions within boundaries and limits agreed with their team. The candidate would be expected to seek support, advice or assistance if they are unclear about what to do or if unusual or untoward situations arise (such as a significant deterioration in the client's condition).

The award is structured so that a candidate will achieve four core units, plus four option units.
